Yaroslav Hunka served in the 14th SS Volunteer Division "Galichina", recruited from Ukrainian volunteers and taking part in World War II on the side of Germany in 1943-1945.

Canada's Jewish community was outraged by the celebration of the fascist in the Parliament.

"Hunka served in the Second World War as a member of the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, according to the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights group that demanded and received an apology from Rota." ~ CBC News

The Russian Embassy sent a note of protest to the Canadian Foreign Ministry and the office of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"The Kremlin said it was "outrageous" that a Ukrainian man who served in one of Adolf Hitler's Waffen SS units during the Second World War had been presented to Canada's Parliament last week as a hero." ~ CBC News

Poland and Belarus also demanded an apology from the Canadian authorities.

The representative of the UN Secretary General, Stephane Dujarric, said that the organization opposes the glorification of the Nazis.
